For 250 years Australian Farmers have been cultivating the great Australian Sheepskin, renowned for its sturdy pelt, dense and superior fibres. The land of sweeping plains and nutrient rich land, has gifted the world, the Exclusive Australian Sheepskin. At times ballooning to 200 million sheep a year and perfectly plush and durable, for the notorious Australian UGG Boot.

100 YEARS OF UGG BOOT CRAFTSMANSHIP

Over a century ago, Sid Cotton the son of a Queensland farmer recognised the remarkable qualities of Australian sheepskin and introduced it to the world through clothing and boots made to keep pilots warm in open aeroplanes. With its thick, durable pelt that held its shape, trapped warmth, and naturally regulated body temperature, sheepskin quickly earned a reputation for comfort, resilience, and protection in all conditions.

OVER 40 YEARS OF UGG Australia®

In 1981, UGG Australia® was founded by Luda and Roman, who arrived in Australia with little more than determination, a dream and one sewing machine. Searching to use their craft as furriers, they soon discovered Australian Sheepskin Ugg Boots. They bought two sheepskins from the renowned, fifth-generation Mayals Tannery and began crafting boots, that gave them an opportunity to honour and contribute to their new home. From those humble beginnings, UGG Australia® grew while staying true to the Australian Made Sheepskin Heritage.

While commercial trends moved to offshore production and Australian manufacturers and tanneries closed, UGG Australia® stayed stubbornly on course and opened their own tannery. 

Today, we remain the Last Australian Sheepskin Tannery and exclusively offer products that are 100% Australian made — proudly carrying forward a 250-year legacy of Australian Sheepskin Craftsmanship.

OUR CRAFTSMANSHIP & 1ST STITCH GOLDEN TAG 

Starting at our own, and Australia’s Last, Sheepskin Tannery, every UGG Australia® boot features 18mm Merino Cross sheepskin sourced from the best Australian farms. This premium sheepskin is given a Twinface finish, creating both a durable suede exterior and a thick fleece interior. Each boot is then meticulously hand-cut and stitched by our skilled artisans—four decades of craftsmanship ensures our quality is the best. We truly go the extra stitch to make our products last. This natural composition ensures the boots are soft, breathable, and effectively regulate temperature, keeping your feet comfortable year-round. Seeing the 1st Stitch Golden Tag guarantees 100% authentic Australian craftsmanship, made from genuine twin-face sheepskin tanned locally through a sustainable, ethical, and fully traceable production process.

For over four decades, since 1981, the UGG Australia® brand has proudly served consumers through thousands of retail partners across the country. Due to global trademark restrictions, any product featuring the term "UGG" cannot be legally shipped outside of Australia. To serve our customers worldwide, we operate under the brand Sheepskins Downunder®, which is sold exclusively through our international website, www.sheepskinsdownunder.com. Over the years, our boots have been proudly stocked and worn by customers and retailers around the world — from Japan’s Isetan, London’s Office Stores to the US Nordstrom stores and beyond.

• In Australia, we are the exclusive owners of the word trademark UGG Australia® (Australian Ref. No. 1432481).

• We globally hold the trademark for Sheepskins Downunder®.

• Our Sheepskin and Boots are proudly certified with Australian Made Licence 1829.

• Our Exclusively Australian Tanned Medical Sheepskins is certified 4480.1 Grade by the CSIRO and NDIS approved.
